About the Magazine
When I first thought of creating a magazine, I was inspired by a real monthly for kids from the turn of the century. Some of the authors featured in the original St. Nicholas were Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgeson Burnett, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. There were also stories, poems, art, book reviews, and special assignment entries by kids. I have about twenty vintage "numbers" (that's what they called issues), the earliest from 1880 and the latest from 1927! They are really fun and interesting.
My revived version will be published quarterly. I accept stories, poems, art, and book reviews from kids of all ages! Also included in the magazine will be pieces originally from the old St. Nicholas; It will be so interesting to see how kids wrote over a hundred years ago! There will also be a quarterly assignment, which you will find at the end of each magazine. In each number, there will be an assignment for prose, poetry, artwork, and photography. These assignments are optional, though: you don’t need to do all of them, or even any of them!
I’m really looking forward to see your work, and I’m so excited about this magazine! Thank you!
Editor-in-Chief
Fiona Clare Altschuler
Hi! My name is Fiona Clare Altschuler and I’m sixteen years old. I live in Maryland with my parents and six siblings. I love to read, talk, think, sing Broadway songs, study Latin, Greek, and French, and write stories (and letters to my many pen-pals!), and some of my favorite books are Les Miserables, the Harry Potter series, and Kristin Lavransdatter. I am a Charlotte Mason homeschooler and my favorite subjects are literature and language. I am also the editor-in-chief of The Scriptorium, the official student journal of the House of Humane Letters, and I (along with my friend Selah Cross) have a Substack called The Bridge Builders, where we deal with fantasy and the Christian Imagination. Currently, I’m working on the first book of a new series, The Great Divide, and of course, the next number of St. Nicholas!
